Worthing Dome

Project type

Refurbishment of and Edwardian leisure centre

Location

Worthing, West Sussex

The Worthing Dome, built in 1911, is an extraordinary building; it is the only surviving Edwardian leisure centre in the country and a remarkable example of an early interwar cinema. It was transformed from a skating palace to a picture palace in 1921. The Grade II* listing reflects its historical and architectural significance. The Worthing Dome & Regeneration Trust Ltd which was incorporated in 1998, acquired the freehold of the building from Worthing Borough Council. In a prime seafront location coupled with thirty years of accumulated neglect the Dome had become a building at risk. It was therefore necessary to secure the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund in order to secure the building in perpetuity for future generations.
